Finding his fiancé in bed with his brother was bad enough, finding out they’re getting married is the final blow.
Devan Smith needs to cool his anger. He needs to forget the lies and betrayals and work on resetting his life. When his boss orders him to scope out a remote hotel for a possible buyout, Devan’s only interested in getting the job done and getting out. What he’s not interested in is the guy with the piercings, bleached hair, and the smart, kissable mouth behind the reception desk.
Working the hotel reception is the only thing that’s stable in Jonty Bloom’s unstable life. His best friend has had a terrible accident, his ex refuses to move on, and his eight-year-old self is still waiting for his mother to collect him from school. Jonty needs his job. What he doesn’t need is the rude, arrogant, and hot as they come guy who’s rocked up demanding he be let into his room right now.
Thrown together by a freak accident, Devan and Jonty’s lives entwine, and neither wants to loosen the knot. “Times New Roman”;color:#313131;mso-fareast-language:EN-GB”>Can the irrepressible Jonty be the reset Devan needs? Can Devan be the making of Jonty Bloom, or will secrets drive them apart?
This is probably going to be one of the hardest boos to review, why you ask?
Because it is so darn good, that I am struggling to find the words to describe how good the book is. So here goes.
Jonty is a chirpy chap, full of talk and laughter, his mouth sometimes gets him into trouble as he has no brain to mouth filter. When we start the story, we learn that life has not just been tough, but loveless for Jonty. We also learn that he has an Ex well probably not even an Ex unless you count a few dates, is stalking him. There is one person in his life that has loved Jonty for who he is, and that is Jonty’s mysterious friend Tay.
Davan is in Northumberland to find a hotel for his company to buy and renovate and to escape his shitty brother who has not only announced he is marrying Devan’s Ex, the same Ex Devan found cheat with his brother a few months back. Devan like Jonty is in a dark place in his life.
From the moment they meet sparks fly, if you live in the UK you have seen the sexy tv adds for flakes, well Jonty is in the middle of his own version of those adds at the reception desk of the hotel Devan is booking into. Let’s just say Jonty is savouring the chocolate in an erotic way. Which is just one of many priceless and funny scenes in the book.
Jonty is so broken that he does not know how to put the pieces back together or how to trust Devan, he hides behind the humour.
The two characters play the usual dance around each other until they are caught in a very real-life threatening danger. Which makes Jonty’s defences break down into a pile of sand, and this puts Devan’s problems into perspective.
What follows is both heart breaking and wonderfully funny and full of hope at the same time. How Barbara manages to play with your heartstrings so perfectly I just do not know. Though there is a lot of darkness in the past of both characters, together they have the strength to build a wonderful future.
But hey life is not so easy, of course it is not, they have a jealous Ex, and an extremely dangerous and obsessive ex to deal with. And the fact that if Devan’s company buys the hotel, Jonty will be out of a job.
Now even though the book touches on past physical and emotional abuse, and rape, do not be fooled into thinking this is a dark and moody read. It is so far from that. It is full of hope, love, and laughs. I think Jonty is an inspiration to us all.
I always say a good story will touch your emotions whether happy, sad or both. And this one does both, there were a few moments when I had a tear to wipe, and so many moments where I laughed so hard. Jonty has to be one of my all-time favourite characters. I had highlighted a few one-liners that had me laughing but I decided not to mention any of them in my review. I do not want to spoil them for you.
I am so happy that Jonty will be popping up again for Barbara’s Christmas book and, that we will also be getting Tay’s story in book two of the series.

Now caught in the centre of the rip, the waves had gone, but they were being swept further and further out.
“We can’t fight this,” Jonty said. Do not add the word Attraction.
Devan’s teeth were chattering. “You’re right. We need to save our energy. Though at this rate, we’ll end up in Norway.”
“I’ve never been to Norway, have you?” Jonty could feel himself getting colder and colder.
“Then you’ll recognise it if we get there.”
“How far out are we?” Devan asked.
A long way. “We ought to pick out a couple of points on the shore…then we can check our position…see how far we’re moving.” Jonty was breathing heavily. “How about Mike’s shop…and that dark bit of rock…? Looks like a dinosaur’s cock.”
“A dinosaur’s cock? Did they have cocks? I don’t remember that bit in Jurassic Park.”
Jonty had a fit of coughing. “Educational films, though… We now know dinosaurs will eat you…even while you’re taking a crap.”
Devan snorted. “Those films got virtually nothing right. The T-rex couldn’t run because one foot had to be on the ground at all times, so no way could it outpace a jeep. It ate with a puncture-pull movement, not by grabbing and shaking its prey. As for cocks, there aren’t any fossilised ones because dicks in the animal kingdom don’t have a bony component.”
“Wow! That’s the most you’ve said to me…without adding an insult.” Jonty’s teeth were chattering harder and harder. He was going to lose a filling in a minute.
“Only an idiot would think a film about dinosaurs would have everything right.”
The quick grin as Devan said that, slightly warmed Jonty’s freezing body, though not his toes. “How come you can speak in whole sentences…and I can barely breathe?”
“Stop talking. Just breathe.”
So for a while, Jonty managed to stay silent.
“We’re coming out of the rip,” he muttered. “I can feel the pull fading. That’s the good news.” He shuddered. “The bad is…we’re miles out…and the waves are big. Don’t let go…of the board or me.”
“Down now!” Devan shouted.
Jonty grabbed the board and forced the head down. Not quite fast enough. He hadn’t been paying attention. The sea poured into his mouth. Fuck, fuck, fuck! I don’t want to fucking drown. Not now Mr Impossible was mellowing. Jonty was turned and twisted by the water until he didn’t know which way was up, which was down. When he finally surfaced, he could see no sign of Devan and the waves were huge.
Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.
After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.
She writes stories about two guys, two guys and one woman, and one guy and one woman in most genres—contemporary, paranormal, sci fi, suspense, urban fantasy. Her books feature bad boys and quirky heroines, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.
