About Writing

What Inspires you to write?

I’ve always had a very vivid imagination and I’ve been writing stories since I was very little. I feel like I have stories to tell and I want to share them with other people. Writing is such a huge part of my life. I’m miserable on the days I don’t get to hammer some words out and spend time with my characters!

Where do you come up with ideas?

Anywhere and everywhere! Is that a cop out answer? I get ideas when I see a face that I find interesting. News articles are also great for inspiration: part of Jamie’s story in Why I Left You came from reading a news article on the desperate things some people had done after being blackmailed with sexual photos/videos that had been taking of them. Aspects of my own life also offer up inspiration.

Your novels, deal with difficult situations that your characters, are any based on real life situations?

I was dealing with post-natal depression when I wrote Why I Left You. The reasons behind Jamie’s depression are very different and inspired by the news article I mentioned earlier, but his experiences with it are very much based on my own. In Why I Need You, Fin’s little sister is based on my own daughter. The situations in my stories might not all be ones that I have personally gone through, but they are situations that people do go through and I hope that makes them relatable.

If you could give one tip to new writers, what would it be?

Write what your heart tells you to and write every day. That was two tips. Sorry, I cheated!

If you were not an author, what would be your dream job?

I have no idea! My dream job used to be teaching, but then I teach for six years, which pretty much knocked the desire out of me! Maybe acting. I used to dream about playing Eponine in Les Miserables (I can neither sing, nor act, so it’s a total pipe dream).

The Novel

A Dance For Two is based around dancing (of course), do you dance yourself?

I wish! I used to do ballroom dancing when I was a lot younger, but I don’t think I was very good at it. My daughter dances and I love going to the ballet and watching dance movies.

Will there be a sequel to A Dance For Two?

Yes! Adam’s best friend, Mason, gets a story next. It’s a steamy May to December romance.

Why do you think Adam and Luc fit so well together?

I think they fit so well together because they know each other so well. They grew up together, they’ve seen each other’s highs and lows. They’ve always had a strong connection to one another, even if that did get ‘disconnected’ for a while.

If A Dance For Two was made into a film, who would you have as cast members?

You wouldn’t believe how much I agonised over this question! I think Tyler Posey of Teen Wolf fame would make a good Luc and Jim Verraros (American Idol) as Adam, assuming they can both pull of British accents!

Author

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you like to be?

You like the tough questions, don’t you? Mostly, I’m pretty happy being me. I’d quite like to be the Education Secretary for a day, so I can make some sensible choices for our children, that aren’t purely politically motivated.

Tell us something on your bucket list?

I really want to go to Japan! At one point, I was hoping to live there to teach English as a foreign language, but circumstances changed and it wasn’t to be. One day I’ll get there.

Where or what is your special place / thing for relaxing?

Relaxing? What’s that?! I have two young kids, I don’t get to relax often. I do love having massages though (I manage to treat myself to one every 2-3 years!). Hot stone massages are the best.

If you were born in a different country, which country would you choose?

I spent a few years living in Malaysia when I was a child, so probably there.

Out of the Why I series, which couple is your favourite?

I’m honestly not sure I can answer this—it’s like asking me to choose my favourite child! Jamie will always have a really soft spot in my heart, because a big chunk of his story is very personal to me. I adore Fin and Noah and all their awkward cuteness, but there’s also something really special about Martin and Ryan and their patience and honesty with each other. I love them all.

What is Next

Finally, what is your current project, and can you give us some insider details?

Mason’s book and For You I Fall (Angels & Misfits Book 1), the paranormal romance I’m writing with T.N. Nova are both in the editing stages. My current writing project the second book in the Angels & Misfits series. It doesn’t have a solid title yet (hopefully it will soon!). It picks up the story of Killian, an angel who has quite a large role in For You I Fall and Blake, who is a raven shifter, thief and total smart ass. T.N. Nova are having a lot of fun writing their story (and shedding a lot of tears!). The hardest part is having to get used to using American spellings and terminology! You’d think I’d have figured it out after co-writing For You I Fall.

Thanks for joining us today Colette.
